A Zulu strap is a heavy-duty nylon watch strap featuring thicker weave material and larger, rounded stainless steel hardware compared to NATO straps. It typically uses fewer keepers (rings) and larger barrel-shaped hardware. Originally designed for military use, Zulu straps prioritize durability and secure fit in demanding conditions.
NATO straps use thinner nylon with smaller rectangular hardware and two keepers. Zulu straps feature thicker, more robust nylon with larger rounded hardware and typically one or two thicker keepers. Both pass under the watch case for security, but Zulu straps are heavier and more rugged while NATO straps are lighter and more versatile.
Zulu straps work with any watch that has standard spring bar lugs, in sizes matching the lug width (typically 18mm, 20mm, or 22mm). However, their thickness and heavy hardware may not suit elegant dress watches aesthetically. They're best paired with tool watches, dive watches, and military-style watches where robust proportions are appropriate.
