A. Lange & Söhne is the crown jewel of German watchmaking, headquartered in Glashütte, Saxony. Founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the brand was re-established in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's renowned for exceptional hand-finishing, outsize date displays, distinctive asymmetric dial layouts, and in-house manufacture of every component — including screws, springs, and balance wheels.
The Lange 1 (1994) is the brand's signature piece, featuring a distinctive off-centre dial with separate hour/minute, outsize date, and power reserve displays. The Datograph is considered one of the finest flyback chronographs ever made. The Zeitwerk uses a digital jumping hour display with a remontoire constant-force mechanism. The Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna is celebrated for its astronomical complexity.
A. Lange & Söhne represents the German watchmaking tradition, which emphasises three-quarter plates in German silver, hand-engraved balance cocks, and blued steel screws — aesthetics distinct from the Geneva tradition. Every movement is assembled twice: once to run in, then fully disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled to the final specification. This labour-intensive approach results in a level of finishing that even Lange's admirers in Geneva acknowledge as exceptional.
