Ferdinand Berthoud crafts ultra-high-end chronometers inspired by 18th-century marine timekeeping, merging historical precision with modern innovation.
La Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is a Swiss independent watch brand established in 2015 under Karl-Friedrich Scheufele of Chopard, reviving the legacy of the 18th-century master horologist Ferdinand Berthoud who served as Horloger du Roi and contributed foundational work on marine chronometers. The modern brand produces watches of extraordinary technical and artistic ambition, all made in Fleurier, and has won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève's Aiguille d'Or — the industry's top prize — for its debut model.
The Chronomètre FB 1 is the brand's foundational model — featuring a fusée-and-chain constant force transmission, a tourbillon, and a patented power reserve mechanism all visible through an architecturally transparent movement. The octagonal case references 18th-century marine chronometer cases. The FB 1 won the Aiguille d'Or at GPHG 2016 and is considered one of the most significant watch debuts of the modern era. Each is produced in extremely limited numbers.
Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807) was a French-Swiss horologist appointed official watchmaker to the French Navy and the King. He wrote extensively on watchmaking theory and developed marine chronometers used for precise navigation at sea during the Age of Exploration — a time when accurate longitude measurement was a matter of life and death for sailors. His original instruments are held in museums across Europe, and the modern brand's reverence for his legacy is expressed in every technical decision.
