Zenith is a Swiss watchmaker celebrated for the El Primero chronograph movement, blending historic precision with bold modern design.

Zenith is a Swiss watch manufacture founded in 1865 in Le Locle, owned by LVMH since 1999. The brand is most celebrated for the El Primero — one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements, developed in 1969 and famously hidden from LVMH management by watchmaker Charles Vermot who stored the parts in the attic. El Primero beats at 36,000 vph, enabling 1/10th second measurement precision.
The El Primero, launched in January 1969, was among the first automatic chronograph movements ever made — beating rivals from Heuer-Breitling-Hamilton and Seiko-Citizen by days or weeks depending on the account. Its high-beat 36,000 vph frequency allows the chronograph seconds hand to advance in 1/10th second increments rather than the standard 1/6th, making it technically superior for timing precision. Rolex famously used El Primero as the base for the original Daytona automatic in the 1980s.
The Chronomaster collection is Zenith's heartland — vintage-inspired chronographs powered by El Primero variants, including the Chronomaster Sport and Chronomaster Original. The Defy line is modern and sporty, featuring skeletonized dials and the Defy Skyline with a star-motif rotor. The Pilot collection references Zenith's aviation heritage. Under CEO Julien Tornare, Zenith has also gained attention for the Defy Extreme and collaborations with artists and motorsport figures.
